How to take a course at The Automation School:

My name is Shawn Tierney and in this video I'm going to walk you through how to take a course here at The Automation School.

Now while this video will cover everything you need to know to take a course at The Automation School, I've also broken this video up into lessons which you can take below to get a feel for how online courses work and flow on our site.

So, if you’d like to watch the rest of this video as individual lessons as part of an online course, scroll down and select lesson 1 now.

Lesson 1: Registering

The first step to take a course on The Automation School is to create an account, which you can do by selecting one of the Register links on our main page.

When you do, you’ll want to fill in the registration form with…

• a username that is all lower case and contains no spaces
• a valid email address so you can activate your account
• a medium to strong password
• and a profile name which is the name used on any completion certificates you earn.

When done click on “Complete Sign-up” and you’ll see a message notifying you that you need to activate your account via the email we just sent you.

So, open your email client and the registration email we just sent, and click on the LINK within to activate your account, and that will take you to a page on our site confirming that your account was successfully activated.

Lesson 2: Logging in

Once you have an active account you can log in using either the login form in the site sidebar, or by using the link in the site’s menu which brings you to the login page.

Here I want to point out that if you haven't logged in a long time, and you have difficulty logging in, you may need to clear your browsers cache for it to display our most current login page.

Lesson 3: Reviewing course details

To see the details of any course, select it from our main page to bring up the course’s home page.

This is where you'll find the course’s intro video, you’re status in the course, and links to the course overview, lesson listing, and more.

Note that some sections on the course page are expandable, revealing more information when clicked on.

And on any course you haven’t enrolled in, you’ll also find course and bundle pricing listed as well.

Lesson 4: Online Courses

To purchase the online version of a course, start buy logging into our site and then select the course you’re interested in to bring up the course home page.

From here, scroll down and select the online course or bundle you’re interested in purchasing.

Then on the checkout page check the terms box, and then select the purchase button.

At this point you can checkout using any major credit card, or using your paypal account, and after you submit all your payment information you should see confirmation that your payment was accepted and you’ll want to select the option to return to our site.

When you return, since it can take between 10 to 60 seconds for your payment confirmation to come through, if you purchase shows pending after a minute refresh the page and it should now show as Complete.

At that point, you’ll also find that we’ve sent a purchase receipt to your email address that includes links to your course or bundle.

To begin taking your online course, return to the course’s home page and there you should see you are now enrolled in the course, and you can proceed to the lesson list at the bottom of the page where you want to select the first lesson to begin taking the course.

Now while you’re watching some lessons you may notice a lesson timer near the mark complete button, and this indicates that the lesson must play until the timer is done before you can mark the current lesson complete and move on to the next lesson.

And if while you are watching the lesson you have a question, just scroll down to the Lesson Discussion Area below the lesson to submit a question to the course’s instructor.

On the lesson video itself, you’ll find links to watch the lesson in full screen, change the video resolution, adjust the volume, as well as pause the video.

Now just a reminder that you must click on the Mark Complete or Quiz button below the video to save your progress, after which you can either continue taking the course or close your web browser.

When you return to the course you’ve already started taking, see your green icons indicating the lessons you’ve marked as completed, and you can select the next incomplete lesson in the course to continue.

Another link you’ll want to know about is the Your Courses link which takes you to a list of all the courses you’re enrolled in, as well as show your progress in each.

Now when you mark the last lesson of a course complete, you will be returned to the courses home page where you’ll find a new button to view and print your personalized completion certificate.

And since our online courses have no expiration date, once you finish a course you can always come back and view any lesson in any order at any time.

Lesson 5: Vimeo Bonus Copies

When you buy a Vimeo edition of a course you receive a PDF voucher with a coupon code that allows you to redeem a lifetime copy of all that course's video lessons at Vimeo.com.

But before you can redeem that code, you first need to create a free Vimeo.com account, and then use log into Vimeo.com to redeem your coupon.

Once redeemed, the course is added to your Vimeo library and you can watch all the course's videos in any order at any time on Vimeo.com and other supported devices.

You can also use the free Vimeo Mobile App to Download the lessons to watch later Offline on supported mobile devices.

Lesson 6: DVD Courses

If you choose the DVD course option on the course page, the course’s DVD set will be added to your cart and you will be taken to the checking out page.

Here you’ll want to enter in a valid USPS mailing address, and then check the terms box, and then select the purchase button.

At this point you can checkout using any major credit card, or with your paypal account, and after you submit all your payment information you should see a confirmation that your payment was accepted and have the option to return to our site.

When you return, since it can take between 10 to 60 seconds for your payment confirmation to come through, if you purchase shows pending after a minute refresh the page and it should now show as Complete.

Please note that DVD orders ship in 1 to 3 business days after your order is placed, and customers located in the continental USA typically receive their DVD Courses within one to two weeks.

Now you can check on the status of your order by selecting the Purchase History link, and once your DVD set has shipped the notice here will change from Pending to show your USPS tracking number.

Once you receive your DVD, if you have any questions about the content covered, you’ve already been enrolled in the DVD course’s forum on TheAutomationSchool.com where you can ask the instructor questions about the topics cover in the course, as well as watch “digital” bonus videos.
