Shawn Tierney commented on lesson Lesson 32: Final Lesson 5 years, 2 months ago

      Good morning Andy,

Thanks for your request – I'll definitely add it to the list of new topics to cover in the update course, however I currently don't have filming schedule at the moment.

      Thanks again,

      Good morning Andy,

Thanks for your question. The current course is based on View Studio 8.0 as it was filmed a few years ago.

While I do plan to re-film the course in the coming months (the update will be free to all existing students,) below are some brief descriptions of the two new features you mentioned:

      – The CSV Export editor…[Read more]

Shawn Tierney commented on lesson Lesson 22: Communications Setup 5 years, 2 months ago

      Good morning Nghia,

      Thank you for your question.

Since your PLC and PC are both DTE Serial Devices, to communicate between them you need to use a Serial Cross Over cable like the 1747-CP3, or a Serial Straight Through Cable with a Null Modem Adapter (Null modem cables and adapters cross or flip the wires going to pins 2 and 3)

      But since…[Read more]

      Good morning Nghia,

Sorry I wasn't clearer 🙁 Could you please post your question on connecting your PVPlus to your SLC-5/03 on Lesson 22? I want to keep all the RSLinx communications questions in the same place:

Shawn Tierney commented on lesson Lesson 4.5: Expansion I/O 5 years, 2 months ago

      Good morning Maitrey,

Thanks for your question. The issue here is the Outputs of the Micro800 are individual Bools that are not part of a larger Array.

In many of Rockwell's other PLC's, each discrete output is part of a larger array, like in a MicroLogix output O.0/0 is one bit of the O.0 integer.

That why I could not just move the…[Read more]

Shawn Tierney commented on lesson Lesson 3.4: Part Counting (FBD) 5 years, 2 months ago

      Good morning Maitrey,

The Preset Value of 1 Million that I chose for my counter was specific to my scenario / application, and would be different for each application and use in the field.

With a Counter Instruction (like the CTU), the Preset Value (PV or PRE) is the value that would result in the output coming on (Q or DN) when the…[Read more]

      Good morning Maitrey,

Yes, the VFD users manual has all the settings, wiring, and parameters, and you can find it here: https://www.rockwellautomation.com/en_NA/literature-library/overview.page?

Here's the direct links for the PowerFlex 525:

      Good morning Maitrey,

Thanks for your question. Unfortunately, none of Rockwell's PLCs or PACs support switching code from one language to another.

Shawn Tierney commented on lesson Lesson 22: Communications Setup 5 years, 2 months ago

      Good morning Jimmy,

Sorry you ran into issues – do you have a ViewStudio license? That is required to make ViewStudio communicate with RSLinx Classic Lite, so if you only had a demo of ViewStudio it wouldn't work (which is one of the reasons I cover connecting to so many actual PLCs, since many will be using the free View Studio demo.)

      As…[Read more]

Shawn Tierney commented on lesson Lesson 22: Communications Setup 5 years, 2 months ago

      Good morning Jimmy,

      Thanks for your question!

To use the Emulator with FactoryTalk View Studio for testing purposes, you'll need to add RSLinx Classic to your project, but before you do, follow the following steps:

      1) Open, RSLinx Classic, then Topic Configuration, and delete any OPC topics you are not using (this is to avoid conflicts…[Read more]

Shawn Tierney commented on lesson Final Lesson 5 years, 2 months ago

      Good morning Nikhil,

Thank you very much for your comments and for taking my course 😀

The best way to securely remote connect to your Ethernet PLC would be to “VPN” into the network your PLC is on. Note – you'll also have to have the default gateway Ethernet setting in the PLC set correctly for remote access (or even access through a…[Read more]

Shawn Tierney commented on lesson Final Lesson and Credits 5 years, 3 months ago

      Good morning Caina,

Thank you for your comments and question.

I could recommend Compact Basics, but if you are learning at home and don't have access to a CompactLogix and Studio 5000 license, then you wouldn't be able to do the exercises.

That said, Nano Basics Extended Edition might be a good choice since it includes advanced topics…[Read more]
